If you live in Sutherland Shire, you’ve probably got a pile of stuff in the garage that’s waiting for the next council clean-up. It’s a handy service, but it has rules, and plenty of people find out about them the hard way, when half the pile is still sitting on the nature strip the next day.
This guide covers how the Sutherland Shire Council clean-up works, what it will and won’t take, and when it makes sense to hire a skip bin instead.
Council rules can change. For the latest dates, rules and booking form, always check the Sutherland Shire Council clean-up page before you book.
How the Sutherland Shire Council clean-up works
Sutherland Shire Council runs a pre-booked kerbside clean-up. According to the council’s clean-up booking page, here is the basic set-up:
- Eligible residents can book up to two clean-ups per financial year for their property.
- Houses and small complexes (a unit, duplex, villa or townhouse complex with six dwellings or fewer) book for themselves. Strata or body corporate book for larger complexes of seven or more dwellings.
- Wait times can exceed eight weeks in busy periods, so book early.
- You can cancel or reschedule up to seven days before your collection date. Cancel inside that window, or don’t cancel at all, and the clean-up still counts as one of your two for the year.
- The pre-booked clean-up doesn’t apply to Woronora River properties.
Council rules and wait times can change, so check the council’s clean-up page for the latest information before you book.
What the council clean-up will take
Per the council’s clean-up preparation guide, each booking is limited to three cubic metres of household and green waste (3m x 1m x 1m), not counting metals and mattresses. That’s a pile 3 metres long, 1 metre wide and 1 metre high, about the same volume as a 3 cubic metre skip bin, and it fills up faster than most people expect.
Items the council says it will collect include:
- Household items such as furniture, lounges, lamps, sporting equipment, bicycles, toys without batteries and child car seats
- Mattresses: a limit of two mattresses, or one mattress and its base. Mattresses may be collected by a different truck, so allow up to five days
- White goods such as fridges (with doors removed), stoves, washing machines and dryers. Allow two business days from your collection date
- Small electrical appliances without batteries, such as toasters, microwaves, juicers, heaters, stereos, vacuums and hair dryers
- Bundled garden vegetation, no longer than 1.5m and no thicker than a broomstick, tied in bundles with natural string or rope
- Fence palings and wood, no longer than 1.5m with no protruding nails, up to 30 pieces
- Packaging styrofoam in a bag or box (but not foam beans or small packaging balls)
- Empty plastic containers and drums
- One average-sized rug, up to 2m x 3m, rolled and taped
Everything also needs to be light enough for two people to handle. Don’t break furniture up, remove doors from fridges and furniture, and separate your pile into metals, mattresses, green waste and household items.
What the council clean-up won’t take
This is where most of the trouble starts. The council’s list of items it won’t collect is long. Highlights include:
- Building or demolition materials, such as bricks, rubble, tiles, soil, renovation materials and asbestos
- Business, industrial or commercial waste
- Anything over 1.5m in length
- E-waste such as TVs and computers, and electrical items with batteries, such as stick vacuums, e-bikes, e-scooters and battery-operated toys
- Paint, chemicals, motor and cooking oils, batteries, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, medical waste and other hazardous items
- Items containing petrol, such as lawnmowers and whipper snippers
- Car parts, tyres and railway sleepers
- Carpet and sheet glass, such as windows, mirrors, shower screens and glass tabletops
- Air conditioning units and solar panels
- Treated pine and heavy loads of wood or metal
- Thorny branches and bushes (such as palm fronds, roses and bamboo), tree stumps and roots
- Fibreglass items such as baths, canoes and surfboards, plus cast iron baths
- Bean bags, foam beans and shredded foam
- Food scraps
- Anything over the three cubic metre limit
The council publishes the full list on its clean-up preparation page. Anything the council leaves behind is your responsibility to remove at your own cost, and going over the limit could cost you your second clean-up for the year.
E-waste and household chemicals have their own free disposal options. The council runs free e-waste collection events, and the Household Chemical CleanOut takes items like paint, gas bottles, batteries and fire extinguishers. Check those pages for the next dates.
Put your pile out at the right time
Items must go on the kerbside the night before your booked collection, not earlier. The council says early presentation may be treated as illegal dumping. If that happens, you’ll be contacted and given 48 hours to remove the material, including anything others have dumped on it. Rangers will inspect, and penalties may be issued if it isn’t removed. The booking still counts as one of your two clean-ups for the year.
A few more things to get right:
- Stack items neatly between the kerb and the footpath, or between the footpath and your property boundary.
- Don’t block driveways, gutters, footpaths or the roadway.
- Leave space between the pile and your normal bins.
- Don’t park your car in front of the pile.
- Don’t place material under trees or low power lines.
- Keep anything you want to hold onto out of sight, so it isn’t taken by mistake.
When a skip bin is the better choice
The council clean-up suits a tidy-up of old household items. A skip bin is usually the better fit when:
- You’re doing a renovation or demolition. Council clean-ups don’t take building materials, so plasterboard offcuts, tiles and bricks need another option. Our home renovation guide has more.
- You’ve got more than three cubic metres. A skip bin lets you load everything in one go, instead of splitting it across two bookings.
- You can’t wait. If the next available date is weeks away, a skip can be delivered at a time that suits your project.
- You’ve used your two clean-ups for the year.
- You’re clearing a whole property, a deceased estate or an end-of-lease clean-out and need it gone in one hit.
- You’ve got a big garden clean-up with branches or bulky green waste. See our green waste skip bins.
- You’re a tradie or builder. Business and commercial waste is outside the council’s service.
We supply 2m, 3m, 4m, 6m and 8m bins with 14-day hire, so there’s no rush to load everything in a day. Not sure which size you need? Our skip sizes page is a good start, or call Adam and he’ll help you pick the right bin for the job.

Keep in mind that skip bins have limits too. Some items, like asbestos, wet paint, chemicals, gas bottles and car tyres, can’t go in any of our bins. Check the list of what can and can’t go in a skip bin before you load.
Where to put a skip bin
Most customers put the bin on their driveway, and that doesn’t need a permit. If it has to go on the nature strip, road or footpath, you’ll need council approval first. Our guide to council permits for skip bins explains how it works in Sutherland Shire and the rest of our service area.
